Product
How do I know what products to choose?
It's up to you, we have a range of products available to suit you. If you are using tampons, you should always be using the lowest absorbency needed to manage your flow.
You might find that it helps to use different absorbency levels throughout your period – most women find that their flow is heavier in the first few days. Each tampon can absorb a specific amount of liquid. Here's a breakdown of each tampon size we stock:
- Light: <6 grams 🩸
- Regular: 6 - 9 grams 🩸🩸
- Super: 9 - 12 grams 🩸🩸🩸
- Super+: 12 - 15 grams 🩸🩸 🩸🩸
We recommend, for most people, starting with a mixed box of tampons and pads. If you find yourself needing to change your tampon more than once every 4-6 hours during your period, change to a combination of Supers and Regulars, or if your flow is very heavy, all Supers.
What are your tampons made of?
Our tampons are made of 100% organic cotton. They're glue-free, the string is cleverly woven and attached without any adhesives. This means they're free of toxins, bleach and other chemicals. Better for your body.
What are naked tampons?
Naked tampons are 100% organic cotton without the applicator. The packaging on our naked tampons is made from wood pulp and can be composted.
What makes your applicators eco-friendly?
Our applicators are made from cardboard meaning they're fully recyclable, so just rinse them after use and pop them into the recycling bin.
How are your pads sustainable?
Our pads are also made from 100% certified organic cotton, they are compostable including the backing film and packaging. Not only that, our leak-proof pads are made with patented design so can continue to live your daily life stress-free.

Why is organic cotton a healthier choice?
Organic cotton is naturally soft, pH-neutral, breathable and absorbent. Unlike most commercially grown cotton, our 100% organic cotton is grown without the use of fertilisers, herbicides & pesticides. We are talking about one of the most delicate organs in the body, your vagina, which is highly absorptive. By choosing our chemical-free and toxin-free products, you are taking care of yours.
Where are your products made?
All of our products are manufactured within the EU and have all of the necessary healthy and safety certificates. We only partner with ethical manufacturers who adhere to strict codes of conduct. This means throughout the entire supply chain, we know they're paying their workers fairly and provide safe working conditions.
Where is the pouches packaging made of?
Our pouches are made with low density polyethylene which is recyclable. We're constantly working on ways we can make our offering even more sustainable so watch this space for updates.
How should I dispose of the products in an eco-friendly way?
As our tampons and pads are compostable, we recommend putting them in the compost bin after use. Why not put a small compost bin in your bathroom? If you don't compost, it is fine to put them in a normal waste bin as they will still break down over time.
The packaging on our pads and naked tampons are also 100% compostable. So chuck those in the compost bin too.
As for our applicator tampons, the cardboard tube is 100% recyclable. Just give it a rinse and pop it in with the recycling. The applicator tampon packaging is recyclable in certain countries, so we recommend checking your local recycling regs first. Don't worry - we're working on this and should have a recyclable solution for every country very soon.
Can I flush my tampon down the toilet?
No tampon should be flushed down the toilet, although apparently half of women do this regularly. Our 100% cotton tampons are compostable, but they do require time to break down and don’t disperse instantly as is the case with toilet paper.
Only toilet paper should be disposed of down the toilet. Of course, if our organic cotton tampons were to be accidentally disposed of and end up at sea, then they will break down and disperse. They won't harm marine or birdlife, unlike conventional tampons with plastic veils. But better safe than sorry - don't flush 'em.
Do your tampons and pads expire?
We recommend using your Riley products within 18 months. While the bathroom may be the handiest place to keep them, it's also the most likely breeding ground for bacteria. So keep them in a cool dry place.
What is Toxic Shock Syndrome (TTS)?
TSS is a rare but serious disease that can be fatal. It is caused by toxins produced by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. Symptoms of TSS often mimic flu & can include a sudden high fever (usually over 39°C), vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle aches, a sun burn like rash, sore throat, dizziness and/or fainting.
It may be that not all symptoms are present, only a few. If you believe that you have one of more of the symptoms of TSS, remove your tampon immediately & contact your doctor, informing them that you have been using tampons.
TSS can occur during your period or some days after & although TSS can have fatal consequences it can be easily treated at an early stage. It is therefore important to consult a doctor as soon as possible.
You can reduce the risk of TSS by using tampons with the lowest absorbency necessary, by changing your tampon regularly & by alternating with pads, liners or a menstrual cup instead of tampons. What isn't widely known is that you don’t exclusively get TSS from tampons - TSS is caused by a reaction of blood and bacteria which can actually happen to men, women and children, and you can get it from any period product including the reusable ones.
