Your first period is a big moment and it's completely normal to feel a mix of excited, nervous, and curious. Whatever you're feeling, take a breath: millions of people go through this every year and once you know what to expect, it becomes just another part of life.
Here's your no-nonsense guide to getting your first period.
What actually is a period?
A period is your body's monthly reset. Once a month, the lining that's built up inside your womb leaves your body through your vagina as blood, usually over a few days. It's a completely natural sign that your body is growing and working exactly as it should.
When does it usually happen?
Most people get their first period somewhere between the ages of 10 and 15, though earlier or later is perfectly normal too. A helpful clue: periods often start a year or two after your breasts begin developing and after you notice more discharge (a clear or whitish fluid) in your underwear.
Signs your period might be on its way
In the days before, you might notice:
- A bit of tummy or lower-back achiness (cramps)
- Feeling more emotional, tired or irritable than usual
- Sore or tender breasts
- Spots or slightly oilier skin
- More discharge than normal
Not everyone gets these and that's fine too, some people get no warning at all.
What to expect from your first period
-
The colour of your period blood can range from bright red to brownish, especially at the start and end. All normal.
-
The amount of blood is usually light to begin with, sometimes just a few spots. This is called spotting. First periods can also be irregular for the first year or two while your body finds its rhythm, so don't worry if they don't come every 28 days like clockwork, most people don’t have a regular cycle.
-
The length of your period is typically around 3 to 7 days.
What products can I use?
For your first period, pads and pantyliners are often the easiest place to start, they're simple, you can see how your flow is going, and there's nothing to insert. Pop a couple in your bag so you're never caught out.
Tampons are also completely fine to use from your very first period if you'd prefer, there's no age rule. Just start with the lowest absorbency, follow the instructions in the pack, and remember to change them regularly (every 4-8 hours).
Whatever you choose, look for products made from clean, organic cotton, your body is sensitive and gentle, breathable materials are kinder to your skin.
Handling cramps
If cramps bother you, a warm hot-water bottle, gentle movement like a walk, and rest usually help. If they're stronger, a parent or guardian can help you with suitable painkillers. Cramps that are mild and manageable are normal, pain that stops you doing everyday things is worth mentioning to a doctor.
A little period kit for your bag
Being prepared makes everything easier. Keep a small pouch with:
- A couple of pads or tampons
- A pantyliner
- A spare pair of underwear
- A few tissues or wipes
That way, whenever your period arrives, you've got it handled.
Myth-busting, quickly
-
You can still shower, swim, and exercise on your period. Water won't stop it, and movement can actually help cramps.
-
Periods don't smell when you change products regularly, that's just a myth used to sell scented products your body doesn't need.
-
Everyone's cycle is different. There's no single "normal", so try not to compare yours to anyone else's.
When to talk to a trusted adult or doctor
Reach out to a parent, guardian, school nurse or GP if you have questions, or if you notice: very heavy bleeding that soaks through a pad every hour or two, periods lasting longer than about 7 days, severe pain, or no period by around age 15. Asking questions is always the right move, there's no such thing as a silly one.
The takeaway
Your first period isn't something to dread, it's a normal, healthy part of growing up.
With a little kit in your bag and the right info in your head, you'll take it completely in your stride. And remember: you're in very good company. Everyone starts somewhere.
